Ambitions. What are ambitions? Are they merely our dream jobs? Or do they have a deeper significance in determining our life journey? Besides guiding us towards our dream jobs, ambitions certainly influence us in our choice of study, our future lifestyle, our monetary assets, our social and family life etc.
Personally, my ambitions have ranged from scientific ones to artistic ones, usual ones to unpredictibly random ones. Let's see:
When I was merely in Primary School, I dreamt of becoming a doctor, having been inspired by my Uncle who always seems to exterminate the bug by feeding me some pills. Indeed, I was fascinated by the action of drugs and the prospects and working environment. I mean, who can resist the prestige of a "Doctor" salutation, sitting in a air-con room waiting for patients (money), high consultation fees and all?
Oh and when I was young, I totally loved trains, for some random reasons like they are so fast and nice. So I thought of becoming an MRT driver. But travelling on the MRT almost daily has made me think it's simply a mundane job of pressing buttons and all tht. Low pay maybe?
Listening to the radio daily after PSLE caught my eye for the DJ profession, playing games, music, interviewing, conducting road shows and more. So uber cool. But then again, I'll be super busy like preparing content daily and all tht.
Upon entering Y1, I wanted to be a life scientist playing around with bacteria, viruses and all that.
Soon, my ambitions shifted towards the chemical aspect - a medicinal chemist inventing new medication and investigating alternative medication. Working in high tech labs like those in biopolis and playing with cool lab equipment was so attractive. This sure yielded high pay, but a Master's degree is essential (sth I probably would not bother wasting time on).
Well maybe then, I realised being a scientist was way outta my reach so I thought of becoming a teacher. Sure I can still engage in science and even my newly found obsession with the Humanities. The job certainly allows me to inspire students to love the subject and all that, but marking homework, dealing with rebellious students and even adhering to school rules probably turned me away from the job.
Upon returning from US, I thought of becoming an air steward, captivated by the prospects of travelling the world for free, meeting people of various nationalities, flying on board planes and all that. Catch was the irregular working hours that probably meant I'll be called outta bed at ungodly hours to fly to some random corner of the Earth. Besides, other than those big airline companies, it will be hard to settle in smaller companies that offer lower pay and prestige.
So maybe I cant travel as much, but how about a career in tourism I thought. Travelling prospects, tourist satisfaction, exploring the world (and SG). But obviously, people discouraged me like hell for they think SG has no tourism prospects and that qualifications required are low. Says who?
Along came this subject called Drama which allows me to just let go and hang loose, impersonating anyone I wanna be, without having to face consequences and being able to understand the feelings of characters and their motives. Obviously, pursuing a career in entertainment was dirty business and filled with papparazzi and expectations to meet. Fail and out you go - a dog-eat-dog world indeed.
As for now, I do admit I still would enjoy having a taste of all these jobs in my lifetime. But in terms of educatinal qualifications, i may not be able to afford so much money and time. Maybe I should stick to a stable job like a doctor or teacher. Tie3 fan4 wan3 as honglaoshi puts it.
