Hey thr!
Was browsing STOMP and came across this thread on 3x science vs. 2x science, 2x humanities. Was in this dilemma too, this year, while contemplating changing subject combis, albeit being too late now ): Anw, shall air my views here cuz I'm too lazy to sign up for STOMP acc.
3x Science
- Good if you still arent sure of wht u intend to major in in Uni cuz it keeps your options open.
- Good if you enjoy the supposed prestige tht comes with it. Glamorous or not, you decide.
- Good if you enjoy fiddling with formulae or hve a real strong interest in ALL 3 sciences.
2x Humanities
- Good if you can / love to argue your way through.
- Good if you are inqusitive of the human condition.
- Good if you believe that the humanities are abt thinking, and not pure memorisation.
I mean, all those of you who think otherwise, go jump of a tall building lah. SS, you need to argue your way through esp the ATQ part. Geog, esp Human Geog, you need to empathise with the situation and be able to argue your way to answer the question.
Purely stating points may get you thru for now, but in future, language plays a part too. Heard tht from a friend, who heard frm a friend, who heard frm a classmate, who heard frm some tchr. I think it's Ms Tan. Gosh, wht am I doing in class?
"Simple example: Japan has a declining birth rate cuz the ppl are too busy." Think you'd get the mark for a full point? Go die lah. Think agn. Straightly tht is. So wht if they are busy? Wht are th implications a busy schedule hve on child rearing / nurturing?
As for 3x science, it is not v easy in a sense tht u must be able to grasp concepts and master formulae, esp for physics. Or else you're dead. Moreover, you need to be able to cope with the amt of workload given tht thr are generally more assignments and lessons for the sciences.
For humanities, it wld be difficult if cnt seem to empathise cuz you wont be able to argue well if you dun feel for it or are unconvinced of th validity. And if you hate writing essays, dun do humanities cuz you'll be expected to write alot more than bio given tht most questions are abt 4 to 6 marks. & u need to argue. Memorising points will pbb get you halfway thru only.
As for me, I kinda regret taking 3x science. Nt to do w th tchr lah. Cuz maybe I'm nt rly the math person, like I hate calculations and graphs. So yeah, tht's pbb why. Besides, applying some formulae or law or concept may nt always work out for me given tht i spent half the time trying to figure out wht the qn wants and ravaging for any random formula tht may fit the bill. Haha, yeah, I am tht pathetic, esp for math and phy.
2x science 2x humans may be easier as I am way more interested in geog and elit for tht matter. Haha, maybe for JC lah. For nw, 1 more year of 3x science and I'm done. Jiayou!
For me, interest is key. U can hve no bckground / poor grades in say, geog. But if u are interested enough to read up and practise ATQ-ing or arguing each point, you would improve your skills and do well. Versus if you hate it and you get more sick of it upon seeing th thick notes and small font tht nvr seem to end. You'd pbb do poorly.
Disclaimer: The Geog example on Japan was not rly a strong point. Put it up for entertainment purposes and as a result of my random thoughts screaming to be posted here and showcased to the world. LOL.
